Portrait vs Landscape For Videos

Due to smartphones and social media, we have been shooting our videos in portraits aka vertical mode aka the "tall way". However, the way we see the world makes us fell uncomfortable when viewing a vertical video in platforms like YouTube and Facebook. We feel weird watching a video with the black bar at the sides. Why is that? It is because we were born to see the world in the left and right perspective more than the up and down perspective. However, shooting in portraits is in-trend. So when should you shoot at which orientation mode?

First of all, what is landscape and what is portraits? Let’s take a look below

All videos can be different resolutions, depending on the recording camera settings.

  • 1440P (1440 x 2560)

Landscape Video Resolutions:

  • 720P (1280 x 720)

  • 1080P (1920 x 1080)

  • 1440P (2560 x 1440)

  • 1600P (2560 x 1600)

  • 4K (3840 x 2160)

Portraits videos are mostly used when you need to shoot for social media. We also have Facebook, IG and Tiktok stories. Because of these recent platforms, portrait videos or recording in portrait mode is becoming very popular and people are also widely using this when they access these platforms through their phones.

As for landscape, this orientation is the main mode for all videos. Of course, for all the platforms as well. Landscape has more purposes compared to portraits. There is a compatibility difference in both modes.

Shooting in portraits is mostly used when you need to focus on one subject only. However, when we have a group or when we have a lot of other subjects in frame. It is easier to shoot in landscape mode where everyone else has a fair share of the spotlight.

Portrait videos allow market creativity in terms of post editing and post production.

Above all, your choice of video orientation depends on the platform you would like to post content on.

Coming from our experience, it is better to shoot in landscape. Then, you can edit and repurpose for both landscape and portrait videos.
